Chelsea are in a race against time to sign Benfica young gun Joao Felix as the 18-year-old ponders a contract which includes a whopping release clause of £105m (A$189m).

The Mirror report Felix is close to penning the new deal, which would see his fee skyrocket.

It is understood Felix, 18, has sparked the interest of the Blues this season who were hopeful of making a move in the January transfer window.

Felix has appeared in five games for Benfica this season and has impressed, scoring against Aves and Sporting Lisbon.

It means the next Portuguese prodigy is averaging a goal every 76 minutes in the league this season.

The teenager, who can operate in behind the striker and on the left-hand side, is regarded as one of Europe’s future stars, with numerous teams in France and Spain also keeping an eye on the creative midfielder.

Felix’s current contract still has four years remaining but Benfica are understandably keen to get a new one sorted.
