After the dramatic win against Atletico Madrid, Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern are obviously starting to talk about Champions League glory.
Having won the Champions League back in 2013 under Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea haven’t really ever come close since apart from a semi-final defeat the year after and totally missing out of European football in 2016/17 after a disastrous league title defence.
If the Blues are ever going to hit the highs of 2013 again, one player needs to step up to the plate.
That player is Eden Hazard. Indeed, while some of our punters here say he’s one of the world’s greats, our landlord says he’s got to be up there with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in order to elevate his side to such a level.
Since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, for all the plaudits he’s received, he’s not cut it on a regular basis to be known or even spoke about in the same breath as the great two of our time.
No doubt of his dribbling and attacking capabilities, though if Chelsea are really going to take this team all the way to the top, Hazard needs to start adding goals to his game and making a huge stamp of authority all season long.
Every team needs that star player, who is a fair few levels above the rest to elevate the team and push on to greatness. The local chap who sits on the corner of the bar says with the ageing Ronaldo and Messi, there’s a chance there to really take the world’s number one place in the years to come.
Many of the regulars already think it’s Neymar’s to lose, but if Hazard can add the goals, get that consistency needed each week, he can definitely push Chelsea and himself towards the Holy Grail of the Champions League.
Thoughts?
