The world governing body for football, FIFA has slapped Argentine and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi with a four match ban after an incident in their CONMEBOL world cup qualifying match against Chile which they won by a lone goal.
Messi threw a foul mouthed rant at referee’s assistant Marcelo van Gasse, on the sidelines in an incident which was not originally in referee Sandro Ricci’s report but was investigated by FIFA after footages of the incident appeared.
The ban will be for international matches and he will miss their next four matches against Bolivia, Uruguay, Venezuela and Peru before returning for the final match against Ecuador.
The decision by FIFA was communicated to the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on Tuesday evening just before their match against Bolivia which the Albiceleste lost 2-0.
Messi has also in addition to the ban been fined 10,000 Swiss francs which amounts to £8,100.
A statement by FIFA said that, “This decision reflects the consistent case law that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has applied in previous and similar cases.”
Argentina has now dropped to fifth spot in the qualification race and face an uphill task to qualify for the world cup in Russia 2018.
